Aaron Moran is an artist from British Columbia, whose vast body of work is primarily comprised of sculptures constructed from found materials. In 2007, he graduated from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, where he focused on printmaking, in addition to studying drawing and painting. Afterward, he was burnt out and creatively depleted, so he took a hiatus. When he returned to his art, it wasn’t in the disciplines on which he had originally focused, but with a new medium: sculpture.
Working outside of his usual ways opened him up artistically. Moran explains that “having the freedom to work within a different medium, without any preconceptions, any proper ways of doing things—I think that has allowed me to move in this direction.”
His work is certainly unique, easily identifiable as Moran’s. The way he talks about his art conveys an intentionality and desire to explore new artistic ventures. In a video by Zara—which informed me on much of his backstory—you can watch Moran work. He rotates his work-in-progress, trying different spots for an unattached piece. He’s making and solving a puzzle at the same time. Honestly, it looks really fun.
If his transition to sculpture was a creative experiment, it obviously succeeded. He seems very creatively active, frequently posting new work, which steadily changes and stretches his style. The mediums he uses seem like such natural outlets for his creativity.
Even without any details of his life or creative process, he creates beautiful art that makes me see new artistic possibilities and different ways of perceiving the visual world. It is because of this that I especially want to highlight Aaron Moran. Tomorrow, I will post my interview with him and explore the physicality and meaning in his work.
